Tyre FAQ's

Tyre Markings & What They Mean

Every tyre that you buy must show key information in order that you can re-order a replacement tyre safely and confidently.

Speed Ratings & What They Mean To You

The speed rating of a car tyre is determined from the torque of your vehicle's power train by the car manufacturer. If a car manufactured with a V rated tyre, it should always have that speed rating fitted when tyres are replace, for the following reasons:

  • If a car is fitted with the wrong speed/ load rated tyres, this can invalidate your car insurance.

  • Wrong speed rated tyres on a car can lead to a ripple developing in the sidewall, known as a standing wave. This is caused by the torque of the vehicle's power train is too strong for the weakness of the sidewall.

  • To keep costs down, vehicle manufacturers try to keep costs down, and if the car doesn't need a higher speed rating, they won't spend the extra money on fitting it as original equipment. If you have increased the power of your vehicle then your tyres may need to be replaced with higher rated versions.
